What we do

Filtration, purification and humidity control

Most indoor air problems are solved by adding on to the heating and cooling system you already have.

Air filtration

Upgraded filters and whole-house filtration catch the fine dust, pollen and pet dander a standard filter lets through.

Air purification

A whole-home air cleaner kills germs and removes odors and chemical fumes as air moves through your ducts.

Humidity control

Whole-house dehumidifiers and humidifiers keep moisture in check, so your home feels fresh, not musty or dry.

Before you call

Check these before you call

These five checks are safe for anyone, and they’re the first things your technician will look at too. Write down what you find. It helps us narrow the problem quickly.
1

The air filter

If you can’t see light through it, replace it. The size is printed on the frame.
2

The vents and return grilles

Open, clean, and not blocked by furniture, rugs or curtains.
3

The thermostat fan setting

On Auto, air only passes through the filter while heating or cooling runs.
4

Your exhaust fans

Bathroom and kitchen fans turn on and pull air. Run them when you shower and cook.
5

Your humidity reading

Many thermostats show indoor humidity. Note the reading and when it feels damp or dry.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Please don’t disturb suspected mold, unknown residue or damaged duct insulation to get a closer look. Tell us what you saw and we’ll take it from there.

Problems we fix

Common indoor air problems we fix

Here are the problems we solve most often, in plain terms.

98%of indoor air particles are smaller than 1 micron
5 micronsis about the smallest particle even a high-quality furnace filter can trap
130 pintsof moisture a day a whole-house dehumidifier can pull out of your air

Dust that comes right back

A standard filter lets fine dust, pollen and pet dander slip through, and a leaky return duct can pull in more. We upgrade your filtration and check the ductwork that feeds it.

Musty smells and damp air

Too much moisture lets mildew and mold grow and leaves the house smelling musty. A whole-house dehumidifier works with your HVAC system and can remove as much as 130 pints of moisture a day.

Stale, stuffy air

A tightly closed home traps cooking odors, stale air and fumes. A ventilation system brings fresh outdoor air in and sends indoor air out, and some models trade heat and moisture along the way.
Every home is different. Your technician prices the fix on site, itemized, before any work begins.

Repair or replace

When to repair, when to replace

Most indoor air equipment adds on to the heating and cooling system you already have, so one problem rarely means starting over. If a part fails, we repair it. If the equipment is worn out or no longer fits the problem, we talk through replacing it.

5–10 yearstypical life of a whole-house dehumidifier that works with your HVAC system

Three levels of whole-house air cleaning

  1. Level 1Particle removal
  2. Level 2Particle removal and germ killer
  3. Level 3Particle removal, germ killer, and chemical gas and fume removal
Your technician matches the level to the problem you want solved and to how it fits your system.
What we weigh before recommending either
Age. A whole-house dehumidifier typically lasts 5–10 years, a portable one 3–5. Repair history. Equipment that keeps failing is telling you something. Fit. A filter, purifier or dehumidifier should match your system and the concern it’s meant to fix. Upkeep. Most indoor air equipment needs very little care, as long as filters are changed and condensate water drains properly. Your HVAC system. If your heating or cooling equipment is due for replacement, it can make sense to add air quality equipment at the same time.
Financing is available on approved credit. See financing, or ask us about your home.

Maintenance

Indoor air quality maintenance

Filters load up, drains clog and air cleaners need attention. Most indoor air equipment needs very little care, as long as it gets that care on schedule. In an indoor air quality check, your technician:
  •  Checks or replaces your air filter and filtration media
  •  Cleans and inspects your air cleaner or purifier
  •  Checks your dehumidifier or humidifier and clears its condensate drain
  •  Inspects the ductwork and return grilles for dust and leaks
  •  Checks airflow at the vents
  •  Walks you through what we found, in plain terms
Filter, ductwork and airflow checks are part of every West Coast Club HVAC visit.

FAQ

Indoor air quality FAQ

What does indoor air quality service include?
It can include an assessment, upgraded filtration, a whole-home air purifier, humidity control, fresh-air ventilation or duct cleaning. One product doesn’t fix every air problem, so we start with what you notice in your home and work from there.
Is there a service call fee?
We waive it when you choose West Coast for the work while the technician is at your home. West Coast Club members pay no service call fee when work is performed.
Will a better furnace filter fix my air?
It can help, but filters have limits. About 98% of the particles in indoor air are smaller than 1 micron, and even a high-quality furnace filter can’t trap particles much smaller than 5 microns. A more restrictive filter isn’t right for every system either. Your technician will tell you what your system can handle and whether whole-house filtration or an air purifier makes more sense.
What’s the difference between an air purifier and ventilation?
An air purifier cleans the air already in your home as it moves through your ducts. A ventilation system brings fresh outdoor air in and sends stale indoor air out. For dust, pollen or germs, a purifier is the usual fix. For stale air or lingering odors in a closed-up house, ventilation is often the better answer.
Do I need a whole-house dehumidifier?
If your home feels damp or sticky, smells musty, or gets condensation on the windows, it may. A whole-house dehumidifier works with your HVAC system, can remove as much as 130 pints of moisture a day, and helps prevent mildew and mold. Drier air also protects wood floors, furniture and paint, and lets your cooling system work less hard. If your air is too dry instead, a whole-house humidifier adds moisture back.
Will an air purifier help with allergies?
Cleaner air means less dust, pollen and pet dander moving through your home, and many homeowners notice the difference. HVAC equipment can’t diagnose or treat a health condition, though, so talk to your doctor about symptoms. Any equipment we recommend will fit your system and come with the manufacturer’s own performance documentation.
More questions
Is duct cleaning always the answer to visible dust?
No. Visible dust can come from more than one source, and duct cleaning doesn’t fix every air quality concern. Tell us where the dust appears, how fast it comes back, and whether it’s coming out of a register. If there’s been construction, a water leak or pests near the ducts, mention that too. We recommend cleaning only when it fits what we find.
Can you tell what’s in my air from dust or a smell?
Not from a description alone. Dust, odors, condensation or visible residue help us decide where to look, but they don’t identify what’s in the air. If testing makes sense, we’ll explain what the test measures and what it can’t tell you before it starts.
What are the levels of whole-house air cleaning?
There are three. Level 1 removes particles like dust and pollen. Level 2 removes particles and adds a germ killer. Level 3 removes particles, kills germs, and removes chemical gases and fumes. Your technician matches the level to the problem you want solved.
How long does a whole-house dehumidifier last?
Most last about 5–10 years. Portable units typically last 3–5 years, which is why a whole-house unit is often the more cost-effective choice. The main upkeep is making sure its condensate water drains properly.
Does cleaner air help my heating and cooling system?
Yes. A clean system runs closer to peak efficiency, which eases the workload on its parts and helps it last longer. Cleaner, more efficient equipment can also lower your utility bills.
Is there a warranty on indoor air quality work?
Yes. We back qualifying installs and repairs with a lifetime labor warranty. Some exclusions apply, and your technician will explain them. Our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee means you don’t pay for service you’re not happy with.
What should I ask before choosing air quality equipment?
Ask what concern the equipment is meant to address, how it works with your existing HVAC system, what maintenance it needs, and which performance claims the manufacturer supports for that exact product.
What should I do if I suspect gas or carbon monoxide?
Leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Don’t wait for a routine appointment. Once the area is safe, we can check your equipment.
What should I tell West Coast when I call?
Tell us which rooms are affected, when the problem started, and whether it changes when the heating or cooling runs. Mention any recent leaks, construction, new furniture or flooring, pests, filter changes or equipment work. If you have filters, air cleaners or humidity equipment, have the brand or model handy.
