Video Inspection of Drain and Sewer Lines
West Coast Heating Air Solar & Plumbing runs sewer camera inspections in San Diego so you know exactly what is happening inside your drain and sewer lines. A waterproof camera on a flexible cable travels through the pipe and records live video, showing roots, cracks, sags, and blockages along with their distance from the cleanout, so any repair is based on evidence rather than a guess.
A camera inspection makes sense when:
- The same drain clogs again within weeks of being cleared.
- Several fixtures back up or gurgle at once.
- You notice soggy ground, lush patches of grass, or a sewer smell in the yard.
- A cable cleaning brought up roots, mud, or chunks of pipe.
- You are buying an older home and want to know the sewer lateral's condition.
- You are planning a remodel that adds a bathroom or moves a kitchen.
- Another company quoted a large sewer replacement and you want proof first.
West Coast has been an El Cajon based, California licensed contractor (CSLB #810930) since 1996. Call (619) 349-4189 or book online to schedule an inspection.

Camera Inspection Questions
Do I need a sewer inspection before buying a house?
For homes more than about 30 years old, we recommend it. Standard home inspections do not look inside the sewer line, and a repair can run into thousands of dollars.
How long does a camera inspection take?
Most residential inspections take about an hour, depending on cleanout access and the length of the line.
Can you tell exactly where the problem is?
Yes. The camera head carries a transmitter, so we can locate its position and depth from above ground and mark the spot.
Will I get a copy of the video?
Yes. We can provide the recording along with our findings, which is useful for real estate negotiations and insurance claims.
What if the camera finds nothing wrong?
That is useful too. It means a recurring clog is coming from what goes down the drain, and we can suggest simple habits or a cleaning schedule instead of a repair.
What Happens During an Inspection
We start at the most accessible cleanout, often near the foundation or at the property line. If a line is fully blocked, we clear enough of it to get the camera through. The camera head then travels down the pipe while a locator above ground tracks its position, so when we find a problem we can mark its exact spot and depth on your lawn or driveway.
You can watch the screen with us as it happens. When we are done we walk you through what the video shows, explain whether anything needs attention now or can wait, and give you a written recommendation with pricing for any work. We can also provide the recording for a real estate file or an insurance claim.
If your home has no accessible cleanout, we can often go in through a toilet flange or a roof vent. When neither works, adding a cleanout is a modest job and it makes every future cleaning and inspection faster and cheaper.
Much of San Diego County's housing stock dates from the 1950s through the 1970s, when cast iron and clay sewer pipe were standard. Those materials crack, corrode, and separate at the joints as they age, and the region's expansive clay soils shift enough over the years to cause sags and offsets in buried lines.
Inspections we perform include:
- Main sewer lateral inspections from house to street
- Recurring clog diagnosis in branch drains
- Pre-purchase sewer inspections for home buyers
- Post-repair and post-jetting verification
- Pre-remodel drain line assessments
- Line locating and depth marking for repairs

Why Seeing the Pipe Saves Money
An inspection replaces guesswork with a clear picture. You find out whether a recurring clog is grease that jetting will clear, a root intrusion at one joint, or a broken section that needs repair, and you only pay for the work the line actually needs. When excavation is required, a marked location means digging one small hole instead of trenching the yard.
Ignoring warning signs tends to get expensive. A cracked or separated sewer line can leak into the soil under a slab or driveway for months before anyone notices, and a full backup into the house usually arrives at the worst possible time. Buyers who skip the inspection often find out after closing, when the repair is theirs.
