Disposal Repair, Replacement, and Installation
West Coast Heating Air Solar & Plumbing repairs and installs garbage disposals in San Diego kitchens. Whether your unit hums without spinning, leaks into the cabinet, or quit altogether, our plumbers figure out whether it can be fixed or should be replaced, then handle the plumbing and the electrical connection so the sink drains and the disposal runs the way it should.
Give us a call if your disposal:
- Hums when you flip the switch but the blades do not turn.
- Shuts off on its own and needs the reset button every few uses.
- Leaks water into the cabinet from the bottom or the sink flange.
- Makes grinding, rattling, or metal-on-metal noises.
- Leaves the sink full of water after it runs.
- Gives off a bad smell that cleaning does not fix.
- Is more than ten years old and getting weaker.
Licensed under California contractor #810930 and serving the county from El Cajon since 1996, our team can usually fix or replace a disposal in a single visit. Call (619) 349-4189 or schedule online.

Garbage Disposal Questions
Why does my disposal hum but not spin?
Usually something is wedged between the flywheel and the grinding ring, or the motor overheated and tripped. Turn off the power at the switch and call us rather than reaching inside.
How long does a garbage disposal last?
Most last eight to fifteen years depending on the model and how hard it is used.
What should never go down a disposal?
Grease, bones, fibrous peels like celery and corn husks, pasta, rice, and coffee grounds cause most of the jams and clogs we see.
Can you install a disposal where there was not one before?
Yes, as long as there is a nearby outlet or a circuit can be added. We handle the plumbing and the electrical connection.
Is it safe to put ice down a disposal?
A few cubes now and then will not hurt it and can knock loose light buildup, but ice does not sharpen the blades, which do not need sharpening in the first place.
Repair or Replace: How We Decide
We begin by checking power, the reset switch, and the flywheel to see whether a jam or a tripped motor is the culprit. Many no-spin problems are a lodged bone, fruit pit, or utensil, and freeing the flywheel solves them on the spot. We also look at the drain connection and the trap below the unit, because a disposal that seems weak is sometimes feeding into a partially clogged line.
When the housing is cracked, the seals are leaking from the body, or the motor has burned out, replacement is the better investment. We go over the options with you, give you a written price, and install a unit sized for how your household cooks. Every installation includes a new mounting assembly, secure drain and dishwasher connections, and a leak test with the water running.
Size matters more than most people expect. A small one-third horsepower unit is fine for light use, while a busy kitchen that cooks every night is better served by a three-quarter or one horsepower model with a quieter motor and stainless grinding parts. We recommend the size that fits how you actually use the sink, not the most expensive one on the shelf.
Hard water in San Diego County leaves scale in sink drains and on disposal parts, and older kitchens often have undersized or poorly sloped branch drains that let food waste settle. Many homes here also still run disposals installed when the house was built, well past the usual service life of the motor and seals.
Disposal services we provide:
- Jam clearing and motor reset
- Leak repair at the sink flange and drain connections
- Disposal replacement with like-for-like or upgraded units
- New disposal installation in kitchens without one
- Dishwasher drain connections to the disposal
- Clearing kitchen drain clogs below the disposal

A Disposal That Works the Way It Should
A properly installed disposal grinds food waste fine enough to move through your drain without settling, keeps the cabinet dry, and runs quietly for years. You also get a sink that drains completely after every use, which keeps odors and fruit flies out of the kitchen.
Putting off a repair invites bigger problems. A slow leak under the sink can rot the cabinet base and spread mold behind the wall, and a failing disposal that sends coarse food down the line is a common cause of kitchen drain clogs.
If your disposal is jammed, leaking, or worn out, call (619) 349-4189 and we will take care of it.
