Protecting Your Drinking Water Supply
West Coast Heating Air Solar & Plumbing installs, repairs, and replaces backflow preventers in San Diego so water that has left your pipes can never flow back into the clean supply. These assemblies sit on irrigation systems, fire sprinkler lines, and main water services, and when one fails, fertilizer, standing water, or other contaminants can be drawn back toward the faucets you drink from.
Reach out to us if you see any of these:
- Water dripping or spraying from the relief valve on the assembly.
- Your water district sent a notice that the device failed its annual test.
- Low water pressure to sprinklers or the whole house.
- Discolored or odd-tasting water after the irrigation runs.
- A cracked, rusted, or frost-damaged assembly body.
- You are adding irrigation, a pool fill line, or a fire sprinkler system.
- The device is old enough that parts are no longer available.
Our licensed team (California contractor #810930) has handled residential and light commercial plumbing across the county from our El Cajon base since 1996. Call (619) 349-4189 to talk through your backflow assembly.

Backflow Preventer Questions
What does a backflow preventer do?
It lets water flow into your property but blocks it from flowing back into the public supply when pressure drops, so contaminated water stays out of the drinking water system.
Do I need one for my sprinklers?
In most cases, yes. Irrigation lines are a common contamination risk, and local codes require protection on them.
Can a failed assembly be repaired instead of replaced?
Often it can. Replacing internal seals, springs, or checks restores many units. If the body is cracked or parts are discontinued, replacement is the better choice.
What happens if I ignore a failed test notice?
Water districts can issue fines and may shut off service to the connection until the device passes.
How long does a backflow preventer last?
Many assemblies serve for 15 to 25 years with periodic rebuilds, though exposure to sun, freezing, and hard water can shorten that.
Getting the Right Assembly In and Working
The type of device you need depends on what it protects. A garden irrigation line often calls for a pressure vacuum breaker or a reduced pressure assembly, while fire lines and some commercial connections have their own requirements. We look at the hazard, the pipe size, and your water district's rules, then recommend the assembly that satisfies them without overbuilding.
For a failing unit we first check whether new seals, springs, or check valves will restore it, since a rebuild costs much less than a new body. When replacement is the right call, you get a written price, we shut the water down for as short a time as possible, install the new assembly at the proper height and orientation, and confirm it holds before we restore service. A test after installation documents that the device works.
Placement is part of doing it right. Assemblies need clearance for testing, protection from irrigation overspray and lawn equipment, and in some spots a lockable cover to discourage theft of the brass. We set the unit where it is easy to service and hard to damage.
Water agencies around San Diego County require certain backflow assemblies, especially on irrigation and fire lines, to be tested every year, and they send failure notices with a deadline to fix the device. Inland areas see the occasional hard freeze that can crack exposed brass bodies, and coastal air corrodes fittings faster than in drier parts of the county.
Backflow work we handle:
- New backflow preventer installation
- Rebuilds and repairs of failed assemblies
- Full replacement of worn or damaged units
- Irrigation and landscape line protection
- Pool and spa fill line protection
- Insulated covers and enclosures for exposed assemblies

Compliance and Peace of Mind
A correctly installed and working backflow preventer keeps your household water clean and keeps you in good standing with your water district. You avoid fines, avoid the risk of service being shut off for an overdue repair, and know that a pressure drop in the street will not pull yard water into your kitchen tap.
Leaving a failed device in place is risky for your family and your neighbors, because a backflow event can push contaminants into the shared supply. Small leaks from the relief valve also waste a surprising amount of water and tend to get worse until the assembly stops working entirely.
If you got a failure notice or need a new assembly installed, call (619) 349-4189 and we will get it handled before your deadline.
